What is therapy?

"Psychotherapy or talk therapy is a means of helping people cope with a myriad of behavioral and emotional difficulties. Therapy is a great tool when our old means of coping, that previously supported some baseline of stability, changes. It is important to recognize that engaging in psychotherapy is healthy."

"Nurses often develop strong relationships with their patients due to the frequency in which they care for their patients. Nurses tend to internalize losses and trauma often at a deeper, more personal level than doctors."

Why are RN's susceptible
to trauma?

Can RN's benefit from
therapy?

"There are a whole host of benefits to therapy. For many, finding someone they can build rapport and trust with and share their challenges with, has a huge benefit around reduction in depression, anxiety, isolation, shame and guilt. The benefit of a trained professional who can provide means and methods for coping and skill building is powerful. People will express how powerful the experience is, how helpful it is, and how grateful they are to have a clinician who can walk with them during some of their most trying times."

Want information about therapists, credentials and how therapy works?

Therapists are required to have a Master's or Doctorate Degree. This requires 2-4 (+) additional years beyond the undergraduate degree. To acquire licensure, 500 clinical hours prior to graduation must be completed as well as accrue an additional 3,000 training hours post graduation. Therapists are also required to pass national examination to obtain their license. Licensure is regulated by State and Federal Laws.

Once you find a trained and accredited therapist that best matches your needs and therapy commences, the clinician and the client will create a treatment plan by identifying what the focus of the work is (the ways and means clinically to achieve that) and desired goals.

Insurance can pay for Therapy and many practices do work with clients on out-of-pocket basis. If one desires to use their insurance to cover behavioral health services, it is recommended to reach out to your insurance company, asking which providers are paneled within their network and if one has a co-pay and/or deductible as part of their plan.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a work-based program that offers free referrals, assessments and short-term counseling (amount depending on employer). These support resources are all confidential. Pro's of an EAP is that therapy services are free to employees, it's separate from health insurance and it's an easy place to start. Con's of an EAP is that you need to pick therapist from an approved list (and finding one that is accepting new clients), getting set up can take a few days. Contact your workplace Human Resources to be connected/receive information about your Employee Assistance Program.

Alone is no longer enough.

Meet Tara Ryan Kosmas RN! Tara is the Founder & Executive Director of Debriefing The Front Lines. This organization is Nurse led Mental Health Care with emphasis on CommUNITY.

The organization offers a variety of services specific to Nurses including debriefing sessions, wellness programs and continuing education workshops (CEU's) to RN's across all specialties. Visit The Supported Nurse RN Education page for more info.

Debriefing the Front Lines was created in March of 2020 with recognizing that Nurses are living, working, and breathing in the aftermath of tragedy every day. Trauma has an immediate & profound effect. 96% of RN's report experiencing at least one symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), nearly 21% meet the criteria for a clinical diagnosis of PTSD. DTFL's vision is to unite Nurses and alleviate suffering through the sharing of personal stories and experiences. Nurses are given the opportunity for self expression as an integral part of healing trauma.

Our work takes from us not just physically, but also emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Sometimes, we need support from those who understand our experience.
